Why Choose Hardwood?
Hardwood floors are a beautiful choice with stylish and practical purposes. A quality hardwood floor in a home or commercial setting creates a timeless, durable style. Overall, you cannot go wrong choosing wood flooring. It also allows you the option of incorporating decorative area rugs instead of installing carpet which are easy to change out as your design concepts change.
- Hardwood floors are strong enough to handle your hectic household because wood is naturally dense making it less likely to become scratched.
- Hardwood flooring is easy to maintain. All it requires is a dust mop for everyday sweeping and a wood floor cleaner every now and then. When hardwood is maintained, the typical surface finish will last 25 years or longer before refinishing is needed.
- Hardwood is recommended for people with asthma or fiber sensitivities because wood does not trap dust and dander like carpets do. Keeping the air in your home naturally cleaner.
Types & Installation
Installing hardwood floors can range from a fairly easy DIY project to one that requires a greater understanding of carpentry and finishing. There are three options commonly available:
- Laminate wood flooring is the easiest to install. While not real wood, it has gotten pretty realistic looking in recent years. Laminate locks together without using nails or glue - so it can be installed on top of most existing floors. This is a fairly simple DIY project - just be sure to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
- Engineered wood flooring is the second easiest DIY flooring to update the look of your home. It is a thin veneer of hardwood that is glued to wood plies, very similar to plywood. A great benefit of engineered wood flooring is dimensional stability because it is glued to an engineered core.
- Solid hardwood flooring can be challenging to install by yourself. It is installed using a flooring nailer and then sanded and finished. Sanding wood floors is tricky, if you have not done it before so you may want to consider hiring a professional.
